With the falling of the leaves and changing of the seasons, transitioning our skin care to adjust to the seasons is extremely important. As the weather becomes colder and drier, our skin has different needs from the warmer months.  Today, I want to share three tips for caring for transitioning and preparing your skin for the colder, fall and winter months.

Adjust your skin care routine

The change in weather creates a change in our skin and our skin’s needs. With the reduction of moisture in the air during the fall and winter months, our skin needs an extra surge of hydration put back in. Ideally, you want to have both a spring/summer and fall/winter skin care routine to adjust to the environmental and seasonal changes throughout the year.

Replace your lighter and thinner skin care products with thicker, creamier and hydrating products into your routine to put the moisture your skin is lacking back in during the colder, drier months. This is also the perfect time to add a luxurious, quick absorbing face oil to add that extra layer of moisture to your skin. Whether you have oily, normal, or dry skin and even though you don’t feel like you need it, if your local weather changes, we highly recommend you make those small changes to keep your skin in its optimal state.

Sunscreen is still queen

Cloudy, foggy, and cold weather can be deceiving, but it is still VITAL to wear sunscreen daily. Even though the sun may not be out in full force, UV rays are still pushing their way through and doing damage to the skin. A good broad spectrum sunscreen will protect skin from UVA, UVB, and UVC rays.

Exfoliate

Aside from daily skin care, exfoliation is one of THE most important steps in keeping your skin youthful and glowing during the colder months. Exfoliation allows the removal of dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin, which allows the skin regeneration and cell turnover. Doing a gentle scrub or chemical peel no more than 1-2 times per week especially during the winter (in addition to a luxurious face cream) will keep your skin soft, smooth, with no flakiness in sight and soft, supple skin during the winter months.

Don’t forget your lips!

While lips seem to be the most protected part of the face by many during the colder months, give those lips some extra love. Make sure to include exfoliation and sun protection to your lip routine.

I hope these tips are helpful for you as we move into the cold (and personally my favorite time of year) drier months.
